Advocating for Victims of Violence

In December 2021 in the midst of the pandemic and in response to increasing violence and spiraling murder rates, OCR held its first event. Our candlelight vigil honored and mourned the over 600 people who had been killed by gun and gang violence during the year, most of whom were people of color.

The vigil was held outdoors on one of the coldest days of the year, and was attended by community leaders and people from all across the City

We took turns reading each and every name out loud, and some people who had been affected personally by the violence were able to speak about their loved ones.

We also heard from community leaders and members of the clergy who spoke about the need for healing through working together and finding common ground. These words inspire our core work at OCR, which is to bring people together.
